Ringwalt & Liesche Co. (R&L) is a Managing General Agency and Wholesale Broker located in Omaha, NE. Since 1996, R&L has been dedicated to serving retail agents and brokers for the placement of transportation and small to medium-sized commercial lines business.


R&L is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and has binding authority to place insurance business with affiliated insurance companies as well as non-affiliated insurance companies. R&L also conducts business on a brokerage basis with non-affiliated insurance companies.


We have an immediate opening for an Assistant Underwriter who will assist Underwriters in all facets of the underwriting process. The individual in this position will process money and non-money endorsements, prepare binders and invoice all premiums, process cancellations and reinstatement transactions and process all regulatory filings. This person will also assist underwriters with rating large accounts, preparing indications and reviewing inspection reports and audits as needed.

Essential Job Duties:

Processes commercial auto and excess and surplus lines transactions and obtains additional information as needed from retail agent using excellent customer service skills. Orders MVR’s; Issues Binders and Certificates of Insurance; Prepares filings and verifies policy coverage, limits and Named Insured to assure compliance, and sends filings to and communicates with regulatory agencies, underwriters and Home Office as needed; Prepares billing for new business, renewals, endorsements and cancellations; Processes money and non-money endorsements; Reviews new business policies, renewal policies and endorsements for accuracy and distributes to appropriate parties; Obtains loss runs from company web site; Issues policies and endorsements (when applicable); Prepares surplus lines affidavit when necessary; Communicates/corresponds with retail agents to obtain additional information as needed.  


Reviews policies, applications, endorsements and other underwriting information required to develop renewal quotes. Prepares renewal quotes for underwriters’ approval and sends approved renewal quotes to retail agents. Follows-up with retail agent prior to renewal date for status of account. Assists underwriters with rating large accounts, preparing indications and reviewing inspection reports and audits as needed.  


Compares inspection reports to policy information for accuracy. Communicates/corresponds with retail agents regarding any recommendations that need to be completed. Creates suspense item and follows up with retail agents for written compliance on recommendations.


Reviews and processes endorsement requests from retail agents within company and agency guidelines. Calculates additional and return premiums and prepare invoices. Prepares rate sheets, pro-rata calculations and cover letters. Reviews changes with underwriters as needed. Communicates all changes with producers and staff accordingly.          


Processes cancellation notices and reinstatement requests according to guidelines of the applicable state and company. Calculates additional and return premiums. Prepares cancellation and reinstatement endorsements and invoices and distributes to retail agent and company.


Processes audit transactions by issuing the audit endorsement to the expired policy and current policy (if needed), billing the transactions to retail agent and creating suspense items to follow-up for payment from retail agents. Alerts underwriter if audit is unpaid.


Maintains and updates protection class manuals, forms manuals, and underwriting manuals. Updates company specific applications to maintain current edition date.  


Answers and directs incoming calls to appropriate person and records messages as needed, or supplies information to callers using excellent customer service skills. 



High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years related college courses or equivalent
2-3 years related work experience
Personal computer and related software (Windows, Outlook, Excel, Internet)
Basic math
Excellent verbal and written communication
Excellent customer service
Insurance designation or course work such as: IIA, CISR, CIC, AU, CPCU preferred
